Unique Identification Authority of India – UIDAI

The Unique Identification Authority of India has its headquarters in New Delhi and was established in January 2009. UIDAI was functioning as an attached office of the then Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog) vide its Gazette Notification No.-A-43011/02/2009-Admn.I) dated 28th January, 2009. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) became a statutory authority under the provisions of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 (“Aadhaar Act 2016”) on 12 July 2016 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Their vision is to provide a unique identity and a digital platform anywhere and at any time. Aadhaar Authentication literally means the process by the Aadhaar number along with the demographic information or biometric information of Aadhaar number holder is submitted to the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR). They then verify the correctness or lack of thereof, on the basis of information available with it.

UIDAI's mission is to develop policy, procedure, and systems for Aadhaar holders for updating and authenticating their digital identity. It also aims to ensure security and confidentiality of identity information and authentication records of individuals. The UIDAI issues a 12 digit unique number called Aadhaar and is the world's largest project for National Identification Number. The first UID number was issued on 29 September 2010 to a resident of Nandurbar, Maharashtra. The Authority has so far issued more than 120 crore Aadhaar numbers to the residents of India. UIDAI is headed by Shri J Satyanarayana as the part-time Chairman of UIDAI and Dr. Anand Deshpande as part-time member and Dr Ajay Bhushan Panday as the Chief Executive Officer.

The main objective of UIDAI is to provide Aadhar number to all the residents in India with a portable which can be authenticated anytime anywhere. It provides a platform that helps the service providers to electronically authenticate the identity of residents in a safe, quick and hassle-free manner. To verify Aadhaar Number

The Ministry of Finance has allotted Rs. 200 crore to set up Aadhaar enrolment centres. As per the UIDAI, there are over 6500 post office which provide Aadhaar enrolment and update service. Check Aadhar Status

To check the Aadhar status, one has to visit resident.uidai.gov.in/check-aadhaar-status and follow the below guidelines:

You will require your EID (Enrolment ID) to check if your Aadhaar is generated.
The acknowledgment slip contains 14 digit enrolment number (1234/12345/12345) and the 14 digit date and time (dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss) of enrolment. These 28 digits together form your Enrolment ID (EID).
If you have lost your EID, you can Retrieve Lost EID/UID. (resident.uidai.gov.in/web/resident/find-uid-eid) For this, you will require your registered mobile number which you had declared at the time of your Enrolment.

Get enrolled at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre to get your Aadhaar.
Once you have enrolled, check your Aadhaar Status (resident.uidai.gov.in/web/resident/check-aadhaar-status) to know if your Aadhaar is generated.
You will require EID (Enrolment ID) and your Registered Mobile number to get your Aadhaar on your mobile

Your registered Mobile Number / Email which you had provided at the time of enrolment is mandatory to retrieve your lost UID / EID.
You have not registered your Mobile number while enrolling for Aadhaar. You are required to visit a Permanent Enrolment Centre to get it registered.

Aadhaar Services at UIDAI

Verify Aadhar Number

To verify your Aadhaar, you can visit the www.uidai.gov.in Or resident.uidai.gov.in/aadhaarverification (direct link – to verify Aadhaar number on UIDAI's website). You then need to enter the 12 digit Aadhaar number in the relevant box to verify if your Aadhaar number is valid or not deactivated.

However, there are 2 things one needs to keep in mind while verifying the email address and mobile number i.e.:

1) One can use this feature to verify the email address or mobile number that has been declared during enrolment or latest successful processed update request, whichever is later.

2) Registered Mobile Number is essential to avail Aadhaar Online services. In case your mobile number is not registered with your Aadhaar, you will need to visit the nearest Permanent Aadhaar Centre (PAC).

FAQs on UIDAI

The UIDAI has all my data including biometrics, bank account, PAN Etc. Will it be used to track my activities?

Absolutely not. The UIDAI database has very little information that one gives at the time of enrolment or updation.
This includes your name, address, gender, date of birth, ten fingerprints, two IRIS scans, facial photograph ○ Mobile number and email ID.
Also, Section 32(3) of the Aadhaar Act 2016 specifically prohibits UIDAI from controlling, collecting, keeping or maintaining any information about the purpose of authentication either by itself or through any entity.

When I link my bank accounts, shares, mutual funds and mobile phones with Aadhaar, will the UIDAI not get this information?

Absolutely not, because when you give Aadhaar number to your banks, mutual fund companies, mobile phone companies, they only send Aadhaar number, your biometrics (given at the time authentication) and your name etc. to UIDAI for verification for your identity. They do not send your bank account details to UIDAI

Do NRIs need Aadhaar for banking, mobile, PAN and other services?

No, Aadhaar is only for residents of India. According to the Aadhaar Act, 2016, every resident can apply for an Aadhar number. A resident is an individual who has been living in the country for 182 days or more in the year immediately preceding the date of application for enrolment.

Therefore, if a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) has lived in the country for 182 days or more in the last one year right before the date of application for enrolment, then the NRI can apply for an Aadhar card. However, an NRI should hold an Aadhar Card this help him in filing his taxes and getting PAN Card and other related services.

Some agencies are not accepting e-Aadhaar. They insist on original Aadhaar. Why?

E- Aadhaar is as legally valid as original Aadhaar issued by UIDAI. Both should be acceptable by all Agencies. However, in case anyone refuses to accept downloaded e-Aadhaar, the Aadhaar holder can lodge complaints with higher authorities of those departments/ agencies. All agencies should accept e-Aadhaar/ m-Aadhaar. They are equally valid.
